“Passion of the Christ” Sequel Set for 2024 Production, According to Reports
The film has been in its early stages of development for 10 years
The long-awaited sequel to Mel Gibson’s legendary film, Passion of the Christ is set to begin filming next year, according to reports.
This comes on the heels of Passion star Jim Caviezel’s smash-hit, Sound of Freedom.
Like Sound of Freedom, the original Passion of the Christ, which depicts the suffering and crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ, was a surprise success when it originally premiered in 2004.
Spurned by major studios, CBN News recounts, director Mel Gibson funded the film himself with just $30 million, yet the film would go on to bring in $612 million and become one of the most successful independent films of all time.
The sequel, The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, has been in the early stages of development for 10 years but is now listed on IMDB as “In-Production: Expected 2024.”
Mel Gibson and Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace are listed as screenwriters, Maia Morgenstern, who played Mary the mother of Christ in the original and Francesco De Vito, who played Peter, are set to reprise these roles and Caviezel will once again play Jesus.
While Passion of the Christ showed Jesus’ final 24 hours before His death on the Cross, Resurrection will show what transpired between the crucifixion and resurrection.
It is unknown if the current writers’ strikes impacting the film industry will effect the production of the film.
