Paris Olympics outrage heats up with faux apology, apparent cover-up
Organizers now claim the LGBT reenactment of “The Last Supper” was something else entirely, but internet sleuths say otherwise
As millions of people tuned into the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Christians and parents of young children likely got much more than they bargained for — although sadly, this has come to be expected in a world that has so starkly rejected God.
During Friday’s opening ceremonies, a troupe of LGBT performers, including drag queens alongside at least one child, participated in a tableau that appeared to reenact Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, “The Last Supper,” which shows Christ seated among His apostles in His final hours with them before being arrested, tortured, and crucified.
The reaction was swift — faithful Christians around the world expressed shock and dismay at the irreverent display, and many gathered to pray and worship on the streets of Paris in the following days.
In one fitting twist of fate, the city was reportedly hit with a blackout on Saturday night in the midst of which only Paris’ famed Sacred Heart Cathedral was lit up, some said.
Organizers eventually issued an apology for the offensive display, but appeared to try to wiggle out all responsibility and blame Christians for being offended by what they claimed was meant to be a feast of Greek gods, not da Vinci’s famous painting of Christ and His apostles.
"Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, I think [with creative director] Thomas Jolly, we really did try to celebrate community tolerance," Paris spokeswoman Anne Descamps stated. “ If people have taken any offense we are, of course, really, really sorry."
It gets worse.
Apparently, this idea that the tableau was meant to be an LGBT-friendly feast of Dionysus falls apart rather quickly upon scrutiny into the social media posts of French DJ “Barbara Butch,” who was placed in the center of the display with a gold, halo-like crown on her head that was not unlike the monstrance used in Catholic and Anglican churches to carry the consecrated host of Jesus.
Social media users quickly discovered that Butch, a lesbian “fat activist,” had called herself “Olympics Jesus” and had declared the performance to signal the “New Gay Testament” before appearing to renege and refer to it later as “the feast of the gods.” She and Drag Race Paris winner Filip Mrzljak, who was also featured in the tableau, also both posted pictures of the performance above images of the “The Last Supper,” making it very difficult to deny that this was the intended reference.
What’s more, another disturbing feature in the opening ceremonies appeared to be a headless Marine Antoinette, signaling sympathy with the bloody and decidedly anti-Christian French Revolution, which saw thousands killed by guillotine including many priests and religious men and women.
“It’s anything but an apology,” said Bishop Robert Barron, a prominent voice for conservative Catholics,” of what he described as the committee’s attempt to walk back this “clear affront to Christians.”
“It’s a masterpiece of woke duplicity,” he added.
“Why go out of your way to insult billions of people who believe in Jesus Christ?” Greg Laurie, celebrated pastor and the subject of last summer’s hit film “Jesus Revolution,” questioned on Twitter.
Why indeed? The truth is, not only does the world have no problem insulting millions of Christians, the message of “tolerance” the Olympic organizers intended is itself a deliberate rejection of biblical morality. They knew exactly what they were doing—make no mistake.
That said, we must nonetheless pray that as they “know not what they do” in a much larger cosmic sense, that the Lord would have mercy on us and would forgive their folly and lead them to repentance and true acceptance at the foot of His Cross.
He uses all things for His glory — and He has already turned this wicked display of blasphemy around into a great display of worship in Paris! He will not be mocked, and He will redeem those who continue to go against the grain of popular culture and remain unwaveringly reverent to His truth and Word.
