Nearly 400 Books Flagged By Iowa School District for “Graphic Sexual” Content
Many of the books describe graphic sex acts
A school district in Iowa has flagged nearly 400 books to review for possible violations of a recently-passed law that bans sexual material in public schools.
Urbandale Community School District has directed teachers to remove the books from their classrooms as it is considered whether they run askance of SF 496, which prohibits discussions on gender identity and sexual orientation in the classroom and learning material that describes graphic sexual acts.
Among the books was the graphic novel “Gender Queer,” which illustrates sex acts, including pedophilia.
A spokesperson for the district clarified that not all of the books are currently present in school libraries and that the list serves as a guidance for educators to ensure they are not carrying them, The Daily Caller News Foundation noted.
However, in 2021 the district’s review committed voted to keep several books on its library shelves that did describe graphic and even pedophilic sex, such as the book “Lawn Boy” and “Gender Queer.”
Among the other books that were flagged was a picture book for children called “The Hips of the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish” and another about two male penguins who raise a penguin chick together.
Classic novels like “1984” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” were also included, as well as the novel “Beloved” by Toni Morrison; all three have graphic descriptions of sex acts.
